Happy November Families,

We are already two months into school. Where does time go? November is bringing some very cold temperatures. Please make sure your child is dressing for the weather. If you need some assistance with warm clothing, please reach out to our counselor, Mrs. Tang. She can be reached at 360.279.5270.

I would like to emphasize the importance of regular attendance at Broad View. Each school day offers a world of learning and growth opportunities for your child. Attending school every day helps them keep up with lessons, build strong friendships, and develop important life skills. Research shows that students who come to school regularly tend to perform better academically and are better prepared for their future. Let's work together to make sure your child is here every day, ready to seize the exciting adventures of learning and growing at our school. If your child is experiencing any barriers to attending school on a regular basis please reach out and let us know how we can help.

2023 North Whidbey Help House Thanksgiving and Christmas Food Baskets

Thanks to the continued generosity of the North Whidbey Help House, Oak Harbor School District families can enjoy a Thanksgiving and Christmas food basket again this holiday season!

North Whidbey Help House is a local food bank that has been providing food to those in need on Northern Whidbey Island for 45 years! If you are interested check out our website here.

Winter Festival and Basket Raffle

Get ready for the Winter Festival and Basket Raffle at OHHS from 6-8pm on December 1! This year we are adding a silent auction! There will be games, activities, live entertainment, and food for purchase. You can send in items with your student for the basket raffle or silent auction until November 13th. PTA Movie Night

This will be our first movie night of the 2023-24 school year! Family Movie Night at BVE with snacks and food for purchase and free popcorn! Students must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or guardian. The classroom with the most Spirit Wear will get to choose the movie!

Attendance Matters

Good attendance supports children to feel confident and happy about school and learning.

As a parent you can support your child to enjoy life to the fullest by ensuring they attend school EVERY day and also arrive on time.

However, if there comes a time when your student needs to miss school please contact the office by leaving a message on the Attendance line 360-279-5295 or email bveattendance@ohsd.net. If your student is going to be out for more than three days an Attendance contract is required to be filled out and signed by a parent or guardian, teacher, and Principal at least 48 hours prior to the start of the days missed. Contracts can be picked up in the office or downloaded here.

Family Fitness Tip

If your family has not checked out The Price Sculpture Forest yet, you are missing out! Located at 678 Parker Rd in Coupeville, this trail offers family fitness along with art exploration. Enjoy the trail as you spot fascinating sculptures tucked in amongst the trees. Access the self-guided tour on your mobile phone while you hike, stopping to listen to short videos about each artist. Coupeville’s Price family created this unique experience to preserve their 16-acre forest and share it with locals and visitors. The Price Sculpture Forest is located 1½ miles east of downtown Coupeville and is open dawn to dusk, admission is free. Visit https://sculptureforest.org/ for more information!

Students are having a great time in library! They have been reading a variety of books and we have been working on character and story development, as well as the Five Finger Summary. As holiday breaks approach, please continue to encourage your student to read at least 20 minutes a day.

SOAR (Supporting our Amazing Readers)

We are excited to announce that our SOAR program will begin on Monday, October 9. Each child in 1st - 4th grades at Broad View receives reading instruction at their level. Students who receive LAP or Title reading support, resource reading support, and those on or above grade level are all engaged in small group reading instruction at the same time as their grade level peers. This prevents students from missing any core instruction in their classrooms and ensures that ALL students benefit from our Title and LAP programs.

Please look for the SOAR section of this year’s monthly Broad View newsletters for tips and tricks on how to support your readers at home.

As your LAP and Title teachers, we are here to partner with you in meeting your child’s reading needs.

Attendance Matters

Why does attendance matter?

It is more difficult for children to learn to read and to gain other foundational academic skills when they miss many school days. Students who are chronically absent in preschool, kindergarten, and first grade are much less likely to read at grade level by third grade and are more likely to have poor attendance in later grades.

Family Fitness Tip

When it's time to carve those pumpkins, here is a fun healthy snack to make with the seeds!

PERFECT ROASTED PUMPKIN SEEDS

INGREDIENTS

¾ cup raw pumpkin seeds

1 tablespoon olive oil

½ teaspoon kosher salt

¼ teaspoon garlic powder

¼ teaspoon paprika, optional

⅛ teaspoon black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat oven to 350°F
Wash pumpkin seeds in a colander to remove the pulp and fibers. Thoroughly dry with a towel.
In a small bowl combine pumpkin seeds, olive oil, salt, garlic powder, paprika (if using), and black pepper.
Lightly grease a sheet pan with olive oil. Evenly spread the seasoned pumpkin seeds on the sheet pan.
Bake until the seeds are toasted and crunchy, about 12 to 15 minutes. Stir every 5 minutes for even toasting, and check for doneness with each stir by tasting a seed for crunchiness.
Transfer the roasted pumpkin seeds to a bowl to cool down.

Hello BVE Families,

It has been a great start to the year and as always, we love having students back in the library! We have been going over library rules and expectations and how to take care of books. Please help your student remember to bring back their books on their library day or renew their books for another week if they aren’t done reading them. We have also introduced our awesome Book Vending Machine and how to earn a Golden Ticket so they can come down to the library and choose a book to take home. We are excited about the wonderful year we have planned in the library!
