Important Safety Message from Oak Harbor Public Schools

Posted Date: 10/05/24 (12:44 PM)

Dear Oak Harbor Public Schools Staff & Families,

With safety as our top priority, we want to make you aware of a threatening message posted on social media that led to an arrest by Oak Harbor Police Department this weekend.

The social media post was immediately brought to the attention of local law enforcement by the FBI, who acted quickly to identify and arrest the student who they believe is responsible for the threatening message. More information about the arrest and investigation was shared by police in a press release on Saturday.

The Oak Harbor Police Department does not believe there is an ongoing threat to any of our schools. We will continue to work closely with law enforcement. You may see more police presence around our schools next week as an added precaution.  Additionally, we will have counseling services available to students and staff who may be dealing with anxiety or other emotions as a result of this incident. Students can request these supportive services through their teacher and staff can access guidance counseling services individually.

We take any and all threats to safety very seriously. Events like these serve as a valuable reminder if you “See Something, Say Something” by reporting safety concerns through the appropriate channels, which may be an administrator, law enforcement, counselor or through our confidential safety tip line located on the OHPS website. We encourage our families to have conversations with students about the responsible use of social media.  Threats of any kind are not tolerated and have serious impacts on our students, staff and our Oak Harbor community. It can also result in criminal charges and disciplinary action in accordance with school district policies and state law.

We appreciate the quick action of our local law enforcement and the shared goal of maintaining a safe learning environment for all of our students and staff.

Sincerely,

Oak Harbor Public Schools
