Happy February, Explorers,

We’ve had a great kick-off to 2025 with an amazing January! Thanks to our great partnerships with you all, our Explorer Families, our students are learning and growing. It is a goal at Broad View to have all of our students attending school 90% of school days. Students need to be at school to learn their grade-level standards.

Here are some helpful tips to encourage good attendance practices:

  • Establish consistent bedtimes and morning routines to help your child develop the habit of being on time for school.
  • Have regular conversations with your child about the importance of attending school every day, unless they're genuinely sick.
  • Avoid letting your child stay home unless they are truly unwell.
  • If your child is hesitant to go to school, take the time to understand the reason behind their reluctance. Talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to help your child feel more comfortable and excited about school. Keep in mind that complaints of stomach aches or headaches might be signs of anxiety rather than valid reasons to miss school.
  • Whenever possible, try to schedule medical appointments and extended trips outside of school hours to avoid interruptions to your child's learning.
  • If you're facing challenges like unstable housing, transportation, or health issues, don't hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher or school counselor for support and resources

Happy February!

This month we will be continuing our BVE Book Battle and voting for our favorite picture book. Make sure to ask your student which one is their favorite so far. We will also be continuing our learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and other famous leaders during Black History Month.

As always please continue to encourage your student to read at least 20 minutes each night!

Happy Reading!

Family Fitness Tip
Interested in getting out for another hike? We have an amazing location to tell you about that combines history with the natural beauty of Whidbey Island. Round up your family and step back in time at Fort Casey State Park. From the glorious 1903-vintage lighthouse to the catacomb-like bunkers and batteries, this historic military fort is sure to ignite curiosity in our Explorers here at BVE. The walking trails between all these sights offer amazing views of the Puget Sound as well.
Tip: Bring a flashlight to explore the fort!

SOAR (Supporting our Amazing Readers)
Our SOAR program begins in October. Each child in the 1st - 4th grades at Broad View receives reading instruction at their level. Students who receive LAP or Title reading support, resource reading support, and those on or above grade level are all engaged in small group reading instruction at the same time as their grade level peers. This prevents students from missing any core instruction in their classrooms and ensures that ALL students benefit from our Title and LAP programs.

Please look for the SOAR section of this year’s monthly Broad View newsletters for tips and tricks on how to support your readers at home.

As your LAP and Title teachers, we are here to partner with you in meeting your child’s reading needs.

A chart showing the importance of attendance with three categories: Very Good, Below Expectations, and Poor Attendance.
Attendance Matters
Good attendance helps children do well in school and eventually in the workplace. Good attendance matters for school success, starting as early as prekindergarten and throughout elementary school. By middle and high school, poor attendance is a leading indicator of dropout. Developing the habit of attendance prepares students for success on the job and in life. We are lucky to have such great families at Broad View that partner with us to make sure students are at school every day.
